Broken Arrow students gear up for snow with help from school PTA

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. -

Students at Leisure Park Elementary are excited about the chance of snow this week, and thanks to their PTA, many are now better prepared to stay warm as winter weather moves into Broken Arrow.

Students excited for snow day possibilities

Fifth grader Justin Herrera says the talk of snow has students buzzing with excitement.

“It’s going to be great tomorrow since it’s going to snow, everybody’s going to be happy and stuff,” Herrera said.

Herrera, who serves as the school’s student council president, even shared what he would decide if weather-related school closures were up to him.

“I think we shouldn’t be in school,” he said. “Let people have fun and stuff. But that’s my plans, not the school plans.”

PTA provides winter gear for students

To help students stay warm, the Leisure Park Elementary PTA ordered 600 sets of hats and gloves in a variety of bright colors, giving students the chance to choose accessories they like.

“Pink and purple will probably be the first two to go,” one organizer said as students looked through the options.

The winter gear cost about $700 and was paid for through a community grant and a private donation.

Grant arrives just in time

Leisure Park Elementary PTA President Jenny Aukerman said the timing worked out perfectly.

“I actually applied for the community grant in October or November,” Aukerman said. “We didn’t find out that we got it until a month and a half after that.”

Now, the hats and gloves are arriving just as the first major winter weather of the season is expected.

Helping classmates stay warm

Herrera said the effort means a lot to students who may not already have winter gear at home.

“That is so great,” he said. “Because maybe some people don’t have winter gear, so it’s good to have them with good gear for the snow.”

While classes have not been canceled, Herrera says he’s already planning ahead for the weekend if more snow falls.

“I’ll go to church and then stay at home the rest of the day,” he said. “Play with the snow. Do snowball fights.”

Snow days, in style

Whether students chose pink, red, yellow, or black, PTA members say the goal was simple: make sure kids are warm, comfortable, and ready to enjoy the snow.

“Because black matches with everything,” Herrera said of his own choice.

With more winter weather possible this weekend, students say they’re ready, and dressed for it.
