DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

PTAs everywhere must understand and embrace the uniqueness of all individuals, appreciating, that each contributes a diversity of views, experiences, cultural heritage/traditions, skill/abilities, values and preferences.

When PTAs respect differences yet acknowledge shared commonalities uniting their communities, and then develop meaningful priorities based upon their knowledge, they genuinely represent their communities. When PTAs represent their communities, they gain strength and effectiveness through increased volunteer and resource support.

Diverse PTAs are designed to respond to the growing diversity in our public schools and communities and to help PTA serve all children and families.

PROMOTE CULTURAL DIVERSITY IN YOUR PTA

The population of the United States is undergoing significant changes. New ethnic groups and family structures are enriching our cultural landscape. But, one thing has stayed the same: no matter where parents come from or what language and customs they follow, they all want the best for their children. To help these parents learn to work with their schools, PTAs must reinvent themselves as organizations that understand the cultures that make up our school communities.

PROMOTE AN ENVIRONMENT OF INCLUSIVENESS IN YOUR PTA

Inclusion in your PTA is not just cultural diversity but also including Special Education programs, half-day or partial-day programs, teachers and staff, grandparents, guardians, and the community in programs and collaboration within your PTA.
